Who is Responsible for Student Loans After a Divorce?

A recent Wall Street Journal article addressed the issue of how outstanding student loan debt is treated when couples divorce.  Spouses often bring student loan debt with them to a marriage, and many incur student loan debt after marriage as well. This can be a complicated and expensive issue in a divorce, particularly when the average balance of post-secondary education loans is skyrocketing.
