Although states have been approving legal same-sex marriages one by one, federal law has been slower to recognize benefits afforded traditional married couples under federal law for same-sex couples, such as Social Security benefits, federal pensions, veteran's benefits, and medical leave benefits.
On Friday the Obama administration approved a number of new measures that will allow, for example, work leave for all married couples to care for a sick spouse, regardless of gender.
Many of these benefits will apply even in states where same-sex marriage is not legal. However, there are still a number of exceptions to the types of benefits extended even in states where same-sex marriage is already legal.
